About Airborn.co
Airborn.co is a free, open source project, that sets out to take the pain out of learning how to do takeoff and landing calculations.
This app was motivated by the idea that folks are more likely to actually do takeoff and landing calculations if there's an app that can quickly do the work for them, rather than digging through the POH and doing multiple interpolations.
This is the v1 release, which performs basic takeoff and landing distance calculations for every runway at a given airport, for a given airplane, in a given set of conditions.
How it works
- We've digitized the data from Pilot's Operating Handbooks on takeoff and landing performance for various airplanes, converting it into JSON format.
- With Airborn, you'll be asked about your airport, the airplane you're flying, and your takeoff weight.
- Our system attempts to automatically fetch a METAR to fill in details like wind direction, strength, temperature, and altimeter setting. If this isn't possible, for example, if the airport lacks METARs, you'll be prompted to input these manually.
- Finally, we calculate takeoff and landing distances for every runway at your airport, accounting for your specific airplane, conditions, and weight. This process involves interpolating the POH data based on temperature, pressure altitude, and aircraft weight.
This app should be used for educational, entertainment, or simulation purposes only. For actual real-world flights we strongly recommend using ForeFlight's Performance Plus plan.
